DAY 1 - Lemosho Gate → Mti Mkubwa (Forest Camp)

Your climb begins with a final briefing at the hotel, followed by a 2.5–3-hour drive to Lemosho Gate, where your permits are finalized. After enjoying lunch at the trailhead, you’ll step into Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest, where towering trees, hanging vines, and the sounds of wildlife create an enchanting atmosphere. The path winds through dense vegetation, gradually ascending toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first overnight stop.

  • Elevation: 2,200 m → 2,895 m / 7,218 ft → 9,498 ft
  • Distance: 6 km / 4 mi
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Leaving the rainforest behind, today’s trail transitions into open savannah, where tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock define the landscape. As you ascend, rolling hills and small stream crossings lead toward Shira Ridge, a high vantage point offering your first clear views of Kibo’s glacier-capped summit. A short descent brings you to Shira 1 Camp, your next overnight stay.

  • Distance: 8 km / 5 mi
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Our third day is a two-part trek that is designed to help us acclimatize to the altitude. We will start by climbing up to the impressive Lava Tower, which stands at 4,600 meters (15,092 feet) and is a highlight of the Kilimanjaro trek. After having lunch at Lava Tower, we will descend to Barranco Camp, situated in a valley below the stunning Barranco Wall.

  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Heath to Low Alpine Desert

The day starts with a descent into a ravine, followed by a challenging yet non-technical climb up the Great Barranco Wall. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views. The trail then undulates through ascents and descents, leading to Karanga Camp, an ideal spot for rest and acclimatization.

  • Elevation: 3,970 m to 3,995 m / 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
  • Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

After leaving Karanga Camp, the trail joins the Mweka Trail and continues to ascend towards Barafu Camp. This section completes the Southern Circuit, offering panoramic views of the summit. Upon arrival at Barafu, you’ll have an early dinner and prepare for the summit push.

  • Elevation: 3,995 m to 4,673 m / 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
  • Distance: 4 km / 2 miles
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

We begin the final ascent around midnight, trekking steeply upwards on scree towards the summit glaciers. After 4-5 hours, we reach Stella Point (5,739 m) just in time for sunrise, with stunning views of the crater and Mawenzi Peak. An additional hour brings us to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. The descent retraces our steps to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continues to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
